bykStyle | SHORT + Simple

Written by: Sol
Greetings, Fabbies!

#SummerSixteen has OFFICIALLY arrived and I am here for the blue skies, blazing sun and warm temps. With those gems come the most important element of the season: the fashion!

A staple of summer fashion that TOO many of my curvy girls shy away from is shorts. I can’t even begin to count the number of times I have heard: “I can’t wear shorts – my legs are too big/little”.  Or “My legs are too short for shorts”. Or my personal favorite: “I have too many dimples {cellulite} to show my legs”.  Allow me to deliver you all with three simple words: That is bullshit.

The truth is that shorts are just like any other garment you place on your body.  It’s all about what is going to fit and flatter your body and shape the best.  Now, as we all know, byKikiSol throws the middle finger to fashion ‘rules’ because a woman can wear WHATEVER she wants; however, there are three simple guidelines to remember when styling shorts.

  1.  Before You Buy, DIY

So here’s the thing: Depending on your shape and where you buy, finding a great pair of shorts in-store can feel like a lost cause.  Because I have an apple shape {meaning I carry most of my weight in my mid-section} and my legs are short, most in-store short styles don’t fit me well. They either don’t have the tummy room or the length falls in a very awkward place on me.  My solution: Create Your Own!

Go to your closet, grab a pair of old denim jeans that you don’t wear anymore and make your own! With this, you are able to control the length and style of your jeans.  You can even take it a step farther and razor-cut, dip-dye or distress them yourself, sparking creativity and adding your creative touch in the mix!

***BYKSTYLE TIP*** If DIY isn’t your thing, hit up the bin in your local thrift store.  If you’re lucky, you’ll hit the jackpot like I did! I found these Calvin Klein shorts {pictured below} for $1.49 in the bin at my local Goodwill and they were in GREAT condition! The Bermuda style was the perfect length for my short legs, giving the illusion of a slimmer thigh and the high waist was perfect for my apple shape! #Winning

2.   High-Low Can You Go

The key to maintaining my #SimpleChic style is by taking simple pieces and maximizing their value to each other.  A great way to do this is to take a simple pair of $1.49 shorts, put on a white tank and throw on a kimono! When put together, this not only maximizes the value of each piece, but it creates a beautiful asymmetrical or ‘high-low’ line to my look!

Kimonos are THE must-have staple piece of the summer and if you don’t have any, get one today! They bring an effortless chic to any outfit and are versatile enough to be worn on any occasion.  Depending on what look you’re going for, they can be dressed up or down and can take you from ‘Desk to Date’ with just the swap of a shoe!

***BYKSTYLE TIP***  When choosing a summer kimono, look for fabrics that are flowy and breathable. Why? Because they serve double duty – as an outfit accessory AND a swimsuit cover up!

3.  Come Through With Confidence

So here’s the thing: Like any and everything else you wear, if you’re going to rock it, you gotta do it with confidence! The key to rocking a pair of shorts, a dress, or anything else is to bring your A-game!  Add your personal touches through your accessories, hair and makeup and before you know it, you’ll be standing in the mirror with your head held high, ready to show the world your beautiful legs!

**BYKSTYLE TIP**  To ensure confidence, stay away from styles that could potentially cause discomfort. You want your shorts to hit at a comfortable thigh length so that you can stand and sit without pulling, tugging and yanking.  If you do choose to rock a shorter look, throw on a pair of thin tights or leggings. This will not only prevent ‘chub rub’, but it will add an edgy-chicness to your look!

At the end of the day being comfortable, yet stylish, is the way to go – so grab {Or make!} yourself a great pair of shorts and let those legs SHINE for the Summer!!
